Building community, strengthening lives

A simple act of compassion set in motion a national movement to end family homelessness.

Family Promise was founded in 1986.  With homeless children in our own neighborhoods, actions were taken to start Family Promise of the Lehigh Valley.  Weisenberg Lutheran Church is just one of many local churches in transforming lives and empowering families to independence by being a host congregation as part of an interfaith hospitality network.  About four times a year, we will provide meals and a safe and loving environment for up to four families who are temporarily homeless.  We will do this for one week at a time and up to four weeks a year.

Check back as progress continues to be made in this ministry or you can contact Pete or Nancy
or e-mail us at weisenberglutheranchurch@gmail.com or www.fplehighvalley.org for more information.

DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC,
families are housed in motels. We will support the housing cost as well as supply meals for the families.

OUR NEXT HOST WEEK is end of January or early February.
See Nancy to sign up for a meal from
Sunday through Saturday.
Take out containers will be provided.

EXCITING NEWS ! ! !
A Prevention Program began in 2021 to help families that are on the brink of losing their home, to try to get through these trying times. Families enroll for 3 months in the program which focuses on budget and credit. Grant money will help families afford monthly expenses and prevent homelessness. The first family entered the Prevention Program in September and finished out 2021 helping 7 families.

(Since this program started…but PRIOR TO COVID-19)

We are making a difference in families lives!  We hosted families for five weeks so far in our church building. The families arrive on Sunday around 5:00 pm.  After breakfast, they are transported to the Day Center, located at 1346 Hamilton Street, Allentown.  The families return to Weisenberg for dinner, conversation and overnight accommodations. Then the following Sunday, they will be hosted by another church.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Volunteers will be needed to setup on a Sunday afternoon, supply food, prepare dinner with the families, help kids with homework in the evening, help or visit with adults in the evening, sleep overnight at our church, and prepare breakfast on weekends. A big need is for volunteers to clean up on a Sunday morning to takedown beds/supplies. To sign-up, see Eileen, Joyce or Jan.
